Clinical research nurses who work for sponsor-investigators are well-positioned to contribute to the advancement of patient-reported outcomes. After searching the PubMed (MEDLINE) and ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health databases for recent peer-reviewed articles in the nursing literature that address patient-reported outcomes, the author reviewed 17 articles. The author discusses the implications of the reviewed articles in the context of clinical research regulations and good clinical practices, as well as the clinical research nursing standards of practice. The author recognizes a lack of literature directly addressing the clinical research nurse’s role in the advancement of patient-reported outcomes and encourages the clinical research nursing community to address this gap.
